Vintage camera and electronics parts, resin, acrylic, walnut, brass, plywood
The Mechanical-Fossil series grew from the desire to bring life and implied movement back to older found objects, things no longer desired. All parts belonged to mechanical or electronic consumer objects of the past — objects sometimes cherished when you think about the importance of a good camera before quality cameras were as ubiquitous as shoelaces. In their own way, these fossils memorialize the finely crafted parts of the past while transforming them into new lifeforms. These fossils are primarily made from vintage electronics (resistors, transistors, capacitors, wires, etc.) and vintage 35mm camera parts. Each assemblage is meticulously laid out and cast in polyester resin. A second resin is then used to coat the cast. I currently make Mech-Fossils in three sizes: 4in square, 6.75in square, and 9x12in.
All frames are designed to allow the most light into the fossil. The frames are built of wood, acrylic, brass and in some cases cabinet hardware.
